What is my garage door business worth?

Garage door companies sell on owner earnings. BizBuySell does not publish a garage-door row, so the multiple here is the Building and Construction sector average. Service and spring repairs are a different business from new-construction installs for builders.

BizBuySell publishes no garage-door row, so this uses the BizBuySell Building and Construction SECTOR average, not a garage-door-specific multiple. Range applies the typical quartile spread (0.72×–1.21× of the average, from BizBuySell's HVAC quartiles) because no trade quartiles are published. Value your garage door business

Let's estimate what your business is worth. Seven quick questions, no email needed.

Trade: Garage door ·

Which state is it in?

Worked example

Hypothetical. A two-truck garage door company. One tech runs service calls; the owner still sells replacement doors and handles the builder accounts.

  • Revenue $750,000, owner earnings (SDE) $160,000, 9 years, about 20% recurring, “I work in it part of the time”.
  • Start at the published 2.65× average (sector average).
  • No adjustments apply: this business is close to the typical sold garage door business.
  • Adjusted multiple 2.65× × $160,000 = $424,000, range $306,000 – $514,000.
  • Revenue cross-check: $750,000 × 0.59× = $443,000.

What raises the price

  • A book of service and repair calls, not only new doors for builders
  • Technicians besides the owner who can hang doors and wire openers
  • Parts inventory and trucks that transfer
  • Home-warranty or property-manager accounts

What lowers it

  • Revenue tied to one or two builders
  • The owner is the only person who can do the technical work
  • Old trucks and no record of which doors are still under warranty
  • A short lease on the shop

Calculating SDE for a garage door business

Start from net profit on your tax return or P&L, then add back:

  • Owner salary
  • Personal vehicle
  • Depreciation on trucks and tools
  • Interest
  • One-time equipment repairs

Only add back what a buyer can verify. See SDE explained: how to calculate owner earnings and add-backs for a full walkthrough.

If there are two working owners, the second owner's salary usually stays as a cost, because a buyer will need to replace that person.

Questions

Why isn't there a garage-door multiple?

BizBuySell publishes no garage-door row. The number here is the Building and Construction sector average, and the page says so.

How this estimate works

We start from the published average multiple for businesses in this category that actually sold, adjust it for owner involvement, recurring revenue, track record and size, and apply it to your owner earnings. Read the full valuation methodology, including what we don't do.
