What is my concrete business worth?

Concrete contractors sell on owner earnings. Buyers separate repeat residential and commercial flatwork from one-off bid jobs, and look at equipment condition and who holds the license.

BizBuySell industry row: Concrete Businesses. The construction benchmark page is sector context; this multiple is the concrete row, not the sector average. Range applies the typical quartile spread (0.72×–1.21× of the average, from BizBuySell's HVAC quartiles) because no trade quartiles are published. Trade: Concrete ·

Which state is it in?

Worked example

Hypothetical. A residential and light-commercial flatwork contractor with three crews and a field manager.

  • Revenue $1,500,000, owner earnings (SDE) $300,000, 15 years, about 10% recurring, “I manage, my team does the work”.
  • Start at the published 2.54× average.
  • Owner involvement: I manage, my team does the work: +0.15×. Buyers pay more when the business runs without the owner.
  • 15 years in business: +0.10×. Long, proven history.
  • Adjusted multiple 2.79× × $300,000 = $837,000, range $603,000 – $1,014,000.
  • Revenue cross-check: $1,500,000 × 0.61× = $915,000.

What raises the price

  • Repeat builders or commercial clients spread across many accounts
  • Crew foremen who run jobs
  • Owned, well-kept trucks and equipment
  • A signed backlog that will transfer

What lowers it

  • One or two builders making up most revenue
  • The owner estimates and runs every job
  • Old equipment
  • Bonding tied personally to the owner

Calculating SDE for a concrete business

Start from net profit on your tax return or P&L, then add back:

  • Owner salary
  • Depreciation on trucks and equipment
  • Interest
  • One-time legal or repair costs

Only add back what a buyer can verify. See SDE explained: how to calculate owner earnings and add-backs for a full walkthrough.

If there are two working owners, the second owner's salary usually stays as a cost, because a buyer will need to replace that person.

Questions

Is concrete reported separately from construction?

Yes. BizBuySell publishes a Concrete Businesses row, so this page uses it rather than the construction sector average.

How this estimate works

We start from the published average multiple for businesses in this category that actually sold, adjust it for owner involvement, recurring revenue, track record and size, and apply it to your owner earnings. Read the full valuation methodology, including what we don't do.
